Live Optics provides you with a simple process to upload your Veeam database backup and present your data in a clear and understandable way, so that you can make informed decisions to optimize your backup infrastructure. This document provides an explanation of each slide within the Veeam PowerPoint project output.

NOTE: The Live Optics engineering team is researching the feasibility of enabling this functionality for projects created prior to this release (for all DPS assessments).
Title Slide (Slide 1)
This slide now contains the assessed product’s version, in this case Veeam 184.108.40.2062 (Live Optics currently supports Veeam 9.5 backup files and are determining priority for adding support prior versions).
Summary Slide (Slide 2)
Veeam specific categories/terminology are referenced here to facilitate conversations with backup admins.
Environmental Topology Slide (Slide 3)
This slide helps give an overall picture of how OS’s are distributed in the environment and breakdown by percentage of specific Guest OS Names (28 entries)
Backup Duration Overview Slide (Slide 4)
The goal of this slide is to show, on the left, the number of backup jobs of all types which may be running longer than the typically acceptable production backup window. The table on the right is specific to Fulls and gives an overall picture of the timeframes for these jobs (including 0-8 Hrs).
Object Retention Slide (Slide 5)
This slide is a mapping of Column AY (Retain Cycles, Raw Data tab) from the project’s XLSX, for those entries where Column AE (Bjs Is Full, Raw Data tab) == TRUE (meaning FULLS only). This is meant to convey an overall picture of the retention cycles for the Guest OS Names which are in the Top 5.
Note: RetainCycles = number of restore points kept on disk
Longest Running Backups Slide (Slide 6)
As obvious as it sounds, this is the listing of the backups which are in the Top 10 for duration.
- Capacity is taken from Column AI (Bjs Backed Up Size, Raw Data tab) and converted to GB from Bytes (please note that Bjs Backed Up Size may be zero in some cases and you may want to reference Columns AF, AG and AH to determine read, stored and processed sizes respectively).
- Duration is derived from Raw Data Tab’s Column M (Ts End Time) – Column L (Ts Creation Time)
- Throughput is from Column T (Ts Average Speed, Raw Data tab) converted to MB/Sec
Largest Clients Slide (Slide 7)
Here we take the Object Names (aka Clients) which have capacity in the Top 10 and present them in descending order. Derived from Column J, (Ts Object Name) and Column U, (Ts Read Size, converted to GB).
The policy type is taken from Column D, (Js Job Type), where 4000 = "Physical Server", 0 = "Virtual Server” otherwise "Other" will show in that column.
Total Daily Data Transfer Slide (Slide 8)
An often-overlooked aspect of a backup environment assessment is the bigger picture of the amount of data being transferred each day. This slide helps paint a picture of a backup admin’s practices along with the environment.
Basically, total backup jobs are broken down into types based on Column AE (Backup-Jobs Is Full, Raw Data tab). Then we reference Columns M and L to determine the duration (Ts End Time – Ts Creation Time = Duration). Column V, Raw Data tab is how much data moved for that single backup. From there we create a bar for each day going back 30 days. Note: Jobs can cover more than one day. Ts End Time is not evaluated for specific date/time.
Average Daily Transfer is an average of the bar chart’s totals: SUM (each day’s total capacity backed up) / number of days, where 30 days is most recent 30 days and correlates with the left vertical axis. Backup Jobs (purple line) are the number of jobs that were initiated on each day. These values are on the right vertical axis.
Backup Summary and Slowest Backups Slide (Slide 9)
The top chart shows the average throughput “bucketized” along the X-axis and number of jobs which fall into each bucket on the Y-axis. This information is taken from Column T, Raw Data tab and throughput rounded.
The bottom table lists the top 5 backup jobs with the poorest transfer rates. Data is evaluated from Column J, Raw Data tab (Ts Object Name), Column T, Raw Data tab (Ts Average Speed), Column AS, Raw Data Tab (Guest OS Name) and Column U, Raw Data Tab (Ts Read Size). Note that blank Guest OS’s are included since the information is still meaningful and that empty field itself may be of interest.
