During an Optical Prime (OP) collection of a virtual environment such as VMWare, we report the number of virtual CPUs allocated for each virtual machine. As such, OP is unaware of the status of the Hyperthreading or the impact Hyperthreading may have on the current environment.
Hyperthreading as a technology, is available on many server deployments. The advantage of Hyperthreading is very application dependent. The application must be multi-threaded and be able to leverage the use of Hyper-Threading and logical cores. Currently, Optical Prime does not collect metrics to support the advantages or disadvantages of Hyperthreading.
When evaluating and sizing a new virtual environment from OP collected data, Hyperthreading is not considered. The system designer must review the inventory of applications to evaluate the use of Hyper-Threading.
