Running Live Optics in Extended Mode (Linux)
The Live Optics host-based collector, called Optical Prime is configured to run for a maximum of 24 hours under standard mode. For users that need to run the Optical Prime for a longer duration, the collector will need to be run in "Extended Mode" to allow for a longer time duration to be selected during the configuration of Optical Prime. This KB article describes how to run the Optical Prime in extended mode to select a time duration of up to 7 days.
- The KB article is designed specifically for the Linux based Optical Prime software and servers running a supported version of Linux OS (list of Live opitcs supported operating systems can be found here).
- The KB article assumes that liveoptics_x86.tar.gz or liveoptics_x86_64.tar.gz has been download to source computer or server.
Step 1: Extract Live Optics software
- Open terminal and navigate to directory where Live Optics software was saved
- Extract contents of Live Optics tar.gz files using preferred archive software. Below is a sample method to extract contents of Live Optics archive to save the same folder
Step 2: Run Live Optics Software
Begin running Live Optics in Extended Mode by entering the following command. You will will also be prompted to accept the EULA for the Live Optics software.
Step 3: Verify identity and select data transmission
After accepting Live Optics EULA, you will be prompted to verify your information within the Live Optics software and then choose if the DPACK collector will stream the data back to the Live Optics servers.
Step 4: Add/Remove local server disks from Live Optics
Once Live Optics has detected all of the block level storage on the local server, a prompt will display asking to monitor these disks during the Live Optics session. Chose the appropriate action at this prompt based upon needs of running Live Optics.
Step 5: Change Live Optics collector run session duration
To change the duration of the Live Optics collector run session past the default of 24 hours, choose option 3 and enter the number of hours Live Optics should run before it ends the session.
Step 6: Begin Live Optics collector run session
Complete the remaining configuration options as are needed for your IT environment. The most popular option remaining is "(5) Add a remote machine to be monitored using a remote shell." This will allow additional Linux or Unix based servers to be added to Live Optics before starting the collector run session. Once all configuration options have been completed, enter option 1 to begin the Live Optics collector run session.
